Describe how dust is released
Identify containers, transfer height, quantities and tools, together with the operator's position. A small controlled pour and a bag emptied rapidly into an open vessel create different release patterns. The enclosure and capture arrangement should suit the task rather than require workers to improvise around unsuitable equipment.
Assess the material hazards, including whether special containment, combustible-dust precautions or a different control method is needed. Do not infer suitability for potent or hazardous substances from the word “weighing”.
Look at the occupied booth
Scales, drums and benches can obstruct airflow. Place them on the proposed layout and preserve the required return paths. Consider nearby supply outlets and traffic, which can disturb the intended pattern at the booth opening.
HSE's commissioning guidance links ventilation control to the process in use and requires meaningful performance benchmarks. For a booth purchase, agree the applicable assessment and acceptance evidence with competent personnel rather than accepting an empty-booth velocity as the complete result.
Include the collected material in the maintenance plan
Filters and internal surfaces accumulate the substances handled. Specify access, safe replacement and cleaning arrangements appropriate to those substances. A convenient front access panel is useful only if the maintenance procedure can be performed without uncontrolled release.
Define alarms, operating indicators and the response when the booth is outside its approved condition. Keep the accepted process layout and settings with the equipment record; a major change in container size or work method may require reassessment.
