A volume control damper regulates airflow resistance; it is not automatically an airtight isolation or fire-safety device. Choose it for the balancing or control task and retain those other functions as separate requirements.
Manual balancing or active control?
A manual damper can establish a commissioned setting where the branch requirement is relatively stable. It needs an accessible adjustment and a way to retain and identify that setting. A motorised damper adds control capability but also needs a signal, power supply, actuator selection and defined response.
Decide whether the controller needs position feedback and what happens during a fault. A control command is not necessarily a measured airflow. Where flow regulation is required, the sensing and control arrangement must be specified alongside the blade assembly.
Do not hide the adjustment point
Place the damper where it can be reached after ceilings and equipment are installed. Show access panels and the actuator's removal space. An inaccessible manual handle can turn routine rebalancing into disruptive building work.
Consider nearby transitions, bends and outlets when selecting the arrangement. A highly throttled damper can influence noise and downstream distribution. Coordinate it with the duct design instead of relying on extreme adjustment to correct an undersized branch.
Keep the selection basis consistent
Compare size, blade construction, pressure loss and operating duty at the same airflow. Include material and environmental compatibility, particularly in corrosive or wet applications. General HVAC components should not be assigned specialist process duties without suitable evidence.
HSE's commissioning guidance emphasizes balanced performance at each hood for extraction systems. In those applications, changing a branch damper can affect other branches, so adjustments should follow the system's controlled commissioning and maintenance process.
