An ESD wrist strap is a personnel-grounding system made up of the skin-contact band, cord, connectors and a verified grounding point. The band alone does not provide a complete discharge path. Purchasing should also account for the workstation's testing or continuous-monitoring arrangement.
Fit and connection determine whether the path exists
The band needs reliable skin contact during ordinary movement. Fabric and metal bands offer different adjustment and cleaning characteristics; select around fit, comfort and the operating environment. A cuff worn over clothing cannot be assumed to provide the intended contact.

Use designated connections rather than clipping to an arbitrary metal edge and assuming it is grounded. Electrical grounding points must be established by competent personnel.
Match the cord to the monitoring system
Single-wire and dual-wire arrangements may work with different monitors. Connector appearance does not establish electrical compatibility. Keep the approved band, cord and monitor combination in the purchasing record, including the specified protective resistance arrangement.
Allow sufficient reach for the task without creating a snag or trip hazard. An excessively stretched cord can stress the connector; excessive slack can interfere with handling. Check the route at the workstation with normal tools and drawers in use.
Verify the worn system
A test should address the actual personnel-grounding path under the site's ESD programme, not merely continuity through an unworn cord. Define testing frequency or monitoring, responses to failures and replacement criteria. A pass from a previous shift does not establish that a damaged or disconnected cord is working now.
ESD grounding is for controlling electrostatic charge; it is not electrical-insulating PPE. Tasks involving electrical hazards need their own safe-work assessment and approved controls.
