ESD Wrist Straps & Cords
black metal esd wrist strap
| Link construction | Stainless-steel inner contact links with black protective outer caps |
|---|---|
| Small band circumference | Approximately 146–159 mm |
| Medium / large circumference | Approximately 168–181 mm / 184–197 mm |
| Wrist connection | 4 mm male snap on a single-wire band; matching female cord socket |
| Cord choices | 6 or 12 ft extended, approximately 1.8 or 3.7 m; select comfortable working reach |
| Ground end | Banana plug for a compatible designated workstation ground point |
| Cord resistor | 1 MΩ series current-limiting resistor at the wrist end |
| Ordering unit | Band only or complete single-wire band-and-cord set |
Circumference describes the band, not its diameter. Confirm comfortable contact on the wearer; maximum stretch is not a continuous-wear fit criterion.
Black metal cuff size, cord length and connector arrangement can be selected to suit your workstation and users.
A black metal ESD wrist strap combines a metal contact structure with a dark protected exterior. Its purpose is to maintain an electrical connection at the skin while the outer link surfaces face the work area. The useful distinction is how the cuff is constructed and connected, rather than the black color alone.
Two surfaces perform different jobs
- The inner links
- The inner metal surfaces form the contact with the wearer's wrist. They need to sit against skin around the cuff and remain free of deposits that interfere with contact. A decorative black bracelet with no specified conductive contact path is not an equivalent replacement.
- The protected exterior
- Black outer caps cover the link faces that can approach the board or bench. Their construction should be specified separately from the inner contact surface. Color does not establish a resistance value, cleanroom qualification or electrical shock protection.
- The snap and housing
- The snap transfers the connection into the cord. A worn button or loose socket can disconnect during a normal reach even while the cuff remains snug. Check this mechanical interface when investigating an intermittent workstation alarm.
Fit the working wrist, not just the hand passing through
An expansion cuff must open sufficiently to put it on, then return to a comfortable contact position. Choosing an oversized cuff solely because it slips over the hand easily may leave a loose contact during use.
For a team order, identify the size distribution rather than ordering a single large size for everyone. A wearer should be able to rotate the wrist and reach the normal work positions without the cuff pinching or moving onto clothing. Check the worn electrical path after the size is selected.
A metal cuff supplied without its lead still needs the correct current-limiting cord and ground connection. Existing cables can be retained only when the snap, circuit and condition are suitable for the new band.
Keep cleaning compatible with the finish
Black caps can hide dirt, while polished inner links may look clean despite a thin residue. Establish a cleaning method for both surfaces using the supplied material instructions. Dry the spaces between links before reuse and confirm that the cuff still expands and returns freely.
Abrasive cleaning, uncontrolled solvent soaking or repainting damaged outer links can change the construction. If caps lift, links deform or the contact becomes unreliable, replace the affected component. The wrist strap is a maintained workplace accessory, not a permanent fitting that can be ignored once issued.
For replacement purchases
Compare the old cuff's size, snap and single- or dual-wire arrangement. A black band from another series is not automatically compatible. The cord selection page explains why a plug match is only part of the decision.
For a new workstation
Select the wrist assembly together with its connection and verification method. Use a designated, verified ESD ground point and follow the site's electrical-safety rules. These cuffs control static charge on personnel; their outer finish does not make them insulating equipment for electrical work.
