Protection depends on the complete handling process and the components being protected. The wrist strap does not establish a universal device-protection voltage or a cleanroom grade.
Band material, size, cord configuration and workstation accessories can be matched to your electronics-handling process.
An electrostatic discharge ESD wrist strap helps control charge carried by a person handling exposed electronic devices. This matters at the point where protective packaging is opened and the operator approaches the component. The strap supports a controlled handling process; it does not make every item on a bench electrostatically safe.
Focus on the moment the product is exposed
A packaged assembly can arrive protected and then encounter a different environment at inspection, repair or kitting. Gloves, a clean-looking bench and careful handling do not by themselves establish personnel grounding.
The wrist system provides a path for charge on the wearer while that person handles the device. Connect and verify it through the site's approved process before opening protective packaging or touching an exposed assembly. Keep the band against skin and the cord connected during the handling operation.
Moving a chair, handling packaging and changing posture can affect the work situation after an initial check. A continuous connection is therefore more useful than occasionally touching a metal object and assuming the operator will remain at the same potential.
Control the source that the strap cannot reach
Insulating items
A plastic tray or film can retain charge even when the operator is grounded. Remove unnecessary charge-generating materials and assess essential insulators separately. Where ionization is appropriate, its placement and performance need their own qualification.
The work surface
A surface needs suitable electrical characteristics and an intended connection. A random rubber sheet or an unverified metal plate does not become an ESD work surface simply because a wristband is being worn nearby.
Transport packaging
A wrist strap protects the personnel interface at the station. It does not travel with a board after the board is packed and moved. Select protective packaging for storage and transfer, and close it before the product leaves the controlled handling area.
Build verification into the job, rather than relying on appearance
A bright band and an intact-looking cord can conceal a poor skin interface or an intermittent termination. Verify the worn combination with a suitable tester or the approved monitoring system, and respond to a failure before continuing exposed-device work.
Test equipment checks a defined part of the control system. It cannot certify the component, prove that every tool is correctly grounded or remove a charged insulator from the bench. Process owners should define what is checked and what action follows an abnormal result.
Specify a usable set for the people doing the work
Choose fabric or metal contact construction for the wearing routine and permitted cleaning method. Size and cord route should allow the operator to inspect both sides of an assembly without disconnecting. In shared work areas, enough correctly sized sets and a clear spares arrangement help avoid unsuitable substitutions.
For purchasing, describe the handling task, available ground connections and monitoring arrangement alongside quantities. The general wrist strap options cover the basic assembly, while workstation grounding covers the installation interfaces. These products are for static control at approved electronics workstations and provide no electrical insulating protection.
