Rock wool and PU can describe alternative panel cores or a rock wool panel with PU-treated edges. Clarifying which construction is intended prevents an incorrect substitution at quotation or installation stage.
Alternative main cores
A rock wool core and a polyurethane foam core are different material choices. Compare the complete panel's declared thermal, fire and structural information. Do not assume equal thickness produces equal performance or that the same installation detail works for both.
Combined core and edge construction
A rock wool main core can be paired with polyurethane at defined edge zones. This is a specific composite construction. It should be identified by its section and materials, rather than described as if the main core were interchangeable.
Use the project priorities to guide the choice
For a partition within a workshop, the surface, openings and installation sequence may dominate the specification. A temperature-separated enclosure gives greater importance to thermal continuity and air sealing. Where a fire compartment is required, the complete documented assembly and its permitted details take priority over a general material preference.
For cold storage, include temperature, moisture and vapour-control design. Neither a picture of white metal facings nor the word insulated establishes suitability for freezer service. Select the full system, including joints, floor and door interfaces.
When a substitute is proposed
Compare more than the price and overall dimensions. Review the core material, facing specification, joint profile, fixing arrangement and performance documents. A change that appears small on a quotation may require different closures or installation instructions.
Keep substitutions tied to an approved revision. Mixing incompatible profiles within one wall can create gaps and force site alterations that were never part of the design.
Make the construction explicit
Write the main core and any PU edge component separately in the purchase specification. If you need a full polyurethane or PIR core instead, request that as a distinct panel type. For the edge-sealed option, see polyurethane rock wool construction details.
shengtongJH can coordinate panel options, finishes and connection accessories to suit the selected use and project dimensions.
