In a xenon pulsed-light pass box, the surfaces that receive the intended exposure are central to the process. More time or more flashes cannot be assumed to compensate for an item hidden behind another object.
Draw the load from the lamps' point of view
Identify faces, recesses, labels, handles and support contacts that may be shaded. Include the tray or holder in the assessment. A load arrangement that changes between cycles can change exposure even when the control settings stay the same.
Claranor's pulsed-light application discussion identifies shadowing and packaging geometry as important limitations. Its own validated applications should not be treated as evidence for a different pass box, lamp arrangement or load.
Define the intended result
Surface decontamination, treatment of packaging and sterilisation of a complete device are not interchangeable claims. Establish the required objective, applicable evidence and representative loads with the responsible process team. Avoid assigning a universal microbial reduction to an equipment name.
Material compatibility should also be assessed. Packaging, coatings and labels may respond differently to the selected exposure. Qualification should address both the intended treatment and whether the item remains fit for its next operation.
Keep protective controls part of the assembly
Door interlocks, lamp enclosure, status indication and fault handling should prevent inappropriate access during operation. Maintenance access needs an approved isolation procedure. Do not bypass a protective feature to investigate a cycle or improve throughput.
Lamp condition and the cleanliness of optical surfaces can affect the delivered exposure. Specify the supplier's monitoring, cleaning and replacement provisions, and retain records. A successful timer sequence is not by itself a measurement of treatment at every surface.
