UV-C Fixtures: Define the Treatment Target and Exposure Controls

UV-C equipment must be selected for a defined air or surface treatment task. Lamp wattage and operating time alone do not establish the exposure received at every target. Distance, geometry, airflow, shielding and contamination of the lamp or cover can all change the result.

Air treatment and surface treatment are different duties

In an air-treatment device, the arrangement must deliver an appropriate exposure to the moving air. In surface treatment, objects can shadow one another and prevent light reaching the target. A room fixture cannot be assumed to treat hidden surfaces, closed packages or areas behind equipment.

Define the required evidence for the intended application. Do not translate a laboratory result for one microorganism and exposure condition into a universal sterilisation claim.

Occupancy changes the design

Exposed UV-C can injure eyes and skin. An open lamp intended for controlled unoccupied operation is not interchangeable with a purpose-designed enclosed or upper-room system. Controls must suit the specific equipment and installation.

NHS guidance on UV-C air cleaning in occupied healthcare spaces addresses the need for appropriate performance and safety assessment. It should not be read as approval for an unspecified UV lamp.

Specify the operating and maintenance safeguards

  • Define access controls, interlocks and warning indications appropriate to the system.
  • Identify how accidental exposure is prevented during servicing.
  • Include lamp or source maintenance, cleaning and performance checks.
  • Assess material compatibility and any relevant ozone production for the selected source.

Use the manufacturer's complete installation instructions and the facility's responsible safety review. UV treatment complements an appropriate contamination-control programme; it does not remove dirt or replace necessary cleaning.
