A utility sink should accommodate the largest routine item and the movement needed to wash it. The outside width of the unit is a poor substitute for usable bowl dimensions: rims, drainboards and multiple compartments reduce the available washing space.
One deep bowl or several compartments?
A deep single bowl can suit bulky items but may require users to reach too far down. Multiple bowls help separate stages where the process requires them, although each bowl becomes smaller within the same overall length. A drainboard can keep wet items off adjacent worktops if its slope and drainage lead back to the intended collection point.
Choose the working height and front access for the actual task. Repeatedly lifting a heavy wet item over a high rim can be more significant than a small difference in steel finish.
The drain must suit the waste
Identify solids, oils, chemicals and water temperature before selecting waste fittings. The sink is not a treatment system for substances that cannot enter the building drain. Strainers, traps or separate collection need to match the process and local disposal requirements.
Provide maintenance access to the trap and connections. An enclosed base that looks tidy can make a small leak difficult to detect if no service access is included.
Specify the wet details
- Define the bowl's internal dimensions and corner form.
- Coordinate tap reach and height with the item and splashback.
- Choose the material grade and finish for the water and cleaning agents.
- Show the supporting frame or wall brackets and how the unit is secured.
The BSSA's stainless-steel care guidance supports appropriate cleaning rather than treating stainless as maintenance-free. Residue and persistent wet crevices can undermine an otherwise suitable material selection.
Keep equipment washing separate from handwashing where the workflow requires a dedicated hand basin. shengtongJH can coordinate bowl counts, drainboards, frames and service positions. Send the item sizes and washing sequence to establish the configuration.
