Operating Room Status Lights: Show a Defined State with a Reliable Signal

A room status light is useful only when users know what it means and the signal reliably reflects that state. “In use,” “restricted access” and “system fault” are different messages and should not be represented by an unexplained colour.

Agree the message before the wiring

Define who sets the state and when it changes. A manual switch may represent a staff instruction; a signal from another system may represent an equipment condition. Neither should be described as proof of a different condition without a suitable measured or confirmed input.

For example, a lamp linked to a ventilation start command does not establish that airflow is satisfactory. If the intended message is a verified system status, specify the required feedback and fault handling.

Make the indication readable

Choose size, mounting and viewing direction for the corridor or room approach. Text or symbols can clarify the meaning and reduce dependence on colour alone. Keep the site's conventions consistent so the same display does not mean different things in adjacent rooms.

Assess glare and the visibility of the indication under normal lighting. A discreet fitting may be appropriate for a short viewing distance but easy to miss from a long corridor.

Define failure and maintenance behaviour

Decide what a loss of power or signal means to users. If a dark light could be misread as permission to enter, the operating procedure and indication need reconsideration. A status lamp should not replace a required alarm or access-control safety function.

Coordinate the electrical installation with the healthcare system design. NHS HTM 06-01 covers the wider electrical infrastructure; the panel's appearance does not establish that system's reliability.

Provide the state descriptions, signal type, voltage and mounting location when requesting a quotation. shengtongJH can coordinate the indicator, legend and interface configuration. Send the required status sequence to define the scope.
