Opening speed is only one part of a high-speed roll-up door's operating cycle. Detection, travel, dwell time, safe closing and recovery after traffic all affect how the doorway works. A fast curtain can still remain open for long periods if activation or traffic planning is poorly matched.
Measure the useful cycle
Describe the normal vehicle or trolley approach, the time needed to clear the opening and any following traffic. Decide whether users need full-height opening every time or an approved operating mode for smaller loads. Coordinate these requirements with protective devices and the manufacturer's permitted control functions.
Do not reduce safety margins to gain cycle speed. Commissioning should establish that detection and protective functions suit the installation, including projecting loads and foreseeable pedestrian movement.
Pressure and sealing are separate from speed
A curtain has a particular guide, bottom edge and lintel arrangement. The selected assembly must suit the pressure and air movement across the doorway. ASSA ABLOY's cleanroom roll-up door is an example of a door designed around sealing as well as frequent operation; its performance cannot be assumed for an ordinary industrial curtain.
Include the frame-to-wall detail and the finished floor condition. Gaps at those interfaces can remain even when the curtain is fully lowered. If a fire, smoke or emergency-egress function is required, it needs a specifically suitable and approved assembly.
Plan for the incident that eventually happens
Ask what occurs if a trolley strikes the curtain, a guide is damaged or power fails. Distinguish an approved recovery feature from a technician's repair. Keep access to the drive, controls and manual operation provisions clear after the surrounding fit-out.
The maintenance schedule should reflect the selected equipment and operating frequency. Record curtain and guide condition, detection faults and repeated nuisance activation; these observations can expose a traffic or installation problem before it becomes a prolonged outage.
