A ductwork order should describe the installed air path and its interfaces. Material thickness and dimensions are necessary, but they do not define leakage performance, supports, access, insulation or the responsibility for site connections.
State the duty of the air stream
General supply air, humid exhaust and contaminated process air can require different materials and construction. Identify temperature, moisture and relevant contaminants before selecting the duct specification. Do not use ordinary ventilation ductwork for a specialist hazardous duty without the appropriate design.
Define the operating pressure and applicable construction requirements. A flange that joins two sections mechanically does not automatically provide the required air seal. Include compatible gaskets, sealants and connection details in the order.
Coordinate the route with everything around it
Check bends, transitions, branch take-offs and equipment connections against structure and other services. Avoid leaving the final connection to a severely compressed flexible section or an abrupt site-made transition. The available space should support the intended airflow and maintenance access.
Support the duct independently as required and prevent its loads being transferred unintentionally to fans or equipment casings. Coordinate vibration isolation and connection movement with the selected machinery.
Access is a fabrication requirement
Locate inspection and cleaning access near components that need service. Include access to dampers, sensors and other hidden devices. A removable ceiling tile does not help if the duct access door is on the opposite side.
HSE's LEV guidance identifies ducts, fans, filters, make-up air and discharge as a connected system. In extraction duties, changes to duct routing should be assessed against control performance at the process, not just whether the new section fits.
Retain coordinated drawings and identify any site deviations. Insulation and vapour-control details should follow the actual thermal conditions, with joints and penetrations completed deliberately.
