Polyurethane Sandwich Panels: Control Heat and Air Leakage at the Joints

A polyurethane sandwich panel can reduce heat transfer through the panel field, while a poorly detailed joint still allows air and moisture to bypass it. When selecting an industrial partition or temperature-controlled enclosure, consider the connection details alongside the core thickness.

Heat can take more than one route

The insulating core is one part of the heat-flow path. Metal frames, fasteners, door surrounds and service penetrations can create local bridges. Air leakage carries moisture as well as heat, so an incomplete seal may produce condensation problems that adding panel thickness does not resolve.

Mark the warm and cold sides of the enclosure on the drawing. Coordinate the continuous air and vapour-control details with the actual temperature and humidity conditions. The appropriate arrangement should come from the selected enclosure design; a generic bead of sealant on the visible face is not a complete moisture strategy.

Separate insulation from the exposed finish

The foam core and metal facing answer different requirements. The facing must tolerate the intended cleaning, contact and corrosion exposure. Choose the coating or stainless option for that duty, and include the sealant and trim materials in the same compatibility review.

Gilcrest's panel selection discussion distinguishes thermally focused foam constructions from other cleanroom core types. Product-specific data should still be used for the selected PUR assembly; PIR, PUR and a supplier's proprietary foam should not be silently substituted.

Make quotations comparable

  • Use the same internal and external design conditions, not just a shared thickness.
  • Include joint components, base details, corners and closures around openings.
  • Identify panel spans and support, especially at ceiling or large-opening areas.
  • Keep required fire evidence attached to the complete assembly and intended installation.

Construction sequencing matters. A panel installed against an unfinished or irregular base may leave a gap that is difficult to seal later. Arrange inspections of concealed junctions before they are covered, and retain the approved details for future modifications.

shengtongJH can coordinate polyurethane panel options around the required enclosure. Send operating temperatures, cleaning conditions and layout drawings to discuss a compatible panel and joint package.
