PIR identifies a foam family, but it does not make all PIR sandwich panels equivalent. Core formulation, thickness, metal facings and joint geometry affect the offered product. Thermal values are useful only when their basis and the supplied construction are identifiable.
Read the thermal figure with its conditions
Distinguish thermal conductivity of the insulation from the thermal performance of the complete panel or building element. A favourable core value does not include every joint, fixing and opening in the finished enclosure. Compare declared data at a consistent basis and ask how the proposed junctions are included in the design.
Kingspan's explanation of insulated-panel R-values shows that core technologies and constructions have different declared thermal resistance. Its figures describe its products and should not be copied as guaranteed values for an unspecified supply.
Choose thickness after the duty is clear
State the temperatures and humidity on both sides, the enclosure use and any dimensional constraints. Increasing thickness can affect door frames, corners, service sleeves and the usable internal space. Check that the accessory system matches the selected panel rather than treating those items as interchangeable.
For a refrigerated or temperature-controlled room, maintain the intended air and vapour-control continuity. A leaking penetration may remain a moisture problem even when the panel field is highly insulated. For exterior use, select the weather, structural and joint details specifically for that exposure.
Fire evidence stays with the assembly
Do not translate “PIR” into a universal fire rating. The required reaction-to-fire or fire-resistance evidence must identify the actual product and relevant installation. Changes to facings, joints, supports or openings should be reviewed within the applicable evidence rather than assumed harmless.
A useful offer includes the panel schedule, declared performance, approved joint details and accessories. It should also identify whether installation, support design and site sealing are included. This makes the price reflect the usable enclosure instead of a bare panel quantity.
