A PIR sandwich panel uses a polyisocyanurate foam core between protective facings. It should be specified by the performance and construction of the offered assembly, rather than treated as interchangeable with every PUR panel of the same thickness.
Specify PIR explicitly
PUR and PIR are related rigid-foam technologies, but the names do not establish identical product performance. Identify PIR in the order and retain the corresponding product information. A similar yellow core or familiar panel profile is not a reliable way to verify the formulation.
For a project comparing alternatives, use declared thermal performance on a consistent basis and review the complete construction. Do not compare a tested assembly from one supplier with a general material claim from another.
Fire requirements
PIR is not a non-combustible mineral-wool core. Any reaction-to-fire classification or fire-resistance claim must apply to the offered panel and installation. Skins, joints, fixings, span and orientation can be part of the tested arrangement.
Thermal requirements
The core reduces heat transmission, while joints and perimeter details determine continuity in the finished wall. Increasing the central panel thickness does not remove a metal bridge at a support or an air leak around a service opening.
Coordinate the surrounding construction
Choose the metal faces and coating for the actual exposure. Support heavy fittings independently where required, close cut edges and protect the wall where handling equipment can strike it. For ceiling applications, obtain an appropriate span and support arrangement instead of assuming that wall performance transfers unchanged.
In refrigerated projects, specify the seal and vapour-control details with the operating conditions.
