Hazardous-Area Lights: Match the Certification to the Classified Location

A weatherproof or dust-tight light is not automatically suitable for an explosive atmosphere. Hazardous-area selection starts with the classified location and the substance present, then matches the complete luminaire and installation to those conditions.

Obtain the area's requirements before comparing products

The responsible designer should identify the required equipment protection, gas or dust group, temperature constraints and ambient conditions. Different classification systems are used in different jurisdictions; similar wording does not make their approvals interchangeable.

Ask for the certificate and associated conditions for the exact offered model. A certificate for another housing size, power option or product family is insufficient unless the offered configuration is within its scope.

Read the assembly as a whole

The enclosure, light source, driver, seals and cable entries form the product. Accessories, glands and stopping plugs must be appropriate to the approved construction and installation. Unapproved modifications or replacement components can undermine the protection concept.

The IECEx system provides a framework for certification of equipment used in explosive atmospheres. Where IECEx is specified, verify the current certificate and its conditions rather than relying on a logo or marketing description. Destination acceptance requirements remain part of the project.

Make it usable after installation

Consider access for inspection, cleaning and maintenance without unnecessary exposure to the process. Heat accumulation, deposits and unsuitable mounting can affect operation. The installation and maintenance team should follow the manufacturer's instructions and the applicable hazardous-area procedures.

Lighting performance still matters: provide photometric data for the working area, control requirements and any emergency function. A protective certificate does not determine whether the task receives enough useful light.

shengtongJH can coordinate sourcing against an approved hazardous-area specification. Send the area classification and required certificate scope before selecting a luminaire configuration.
