A gasketed plate heat exchanger transfers heat through corrugated plates that separate two fluid circuits. The plate pattern and number of channels affect both heat transfer and pressure loss. More plate area is not automatically a better selection if it changes velocity or distributes flow poorly for the duty.
Give both sides of the calculation
A useful selection needs the fluid, inlet and required outlet temperature, flow or heat duty, and permitted pressure drop on each side. Include concentration where the fluid is a mixture. The supplier should reconcile the energy balance rather than quote a capacity detached from these conditions.
Identify normal and limiting pressure and temperature conditions. The frame, plates, connections and gaskets must all be suitable for the selected envelope.
The gasket is a process component
Choose elastomer compatibility for the actual fluids, temperature and cleaning chemicals. A gasket material suitable for water service may not suit oils or solvents. Do not select only by the plate's stainless grade.
Alfa Laval's gasketed plate-and-frame range illustrates the serviceable construction. Performance and compatibility must still be established for the offered plate and gasket combination.
Preserve the reason for choosing an opening frame
Reserve enough space to open the pressure plate and remove plates where needed. Pipework should not prevent access. Define the cleaning method, spare-gasket strategy and the documented tightening dimension for the supplied pack.
Expansion may be possible within a particular frame, but additional plates need a new thermal and hydraulic check. Empty frame length is not a guarantee of a future capacity increase.
For existing equipment, changes in approach temperature and pressure drop can help identify deterioration, but diagnosis should consider fouling, flow changes and upstream controls together.
