Two medical gas outlet panels can look similar while accepting different probes or serving different gases. The decisive interface is the terminal unit and its approved connection system. Faceplate colour and an “oxygen” label are not sufficient compatibility evidence.
Identify what will connect
Start with the facility's gas schedule and the actual equipment connection standard. Record the service at each position and ensure the offered terminal units match the specified probes. A panel containing several services also needs enough spacing for connected flowmeters, regulators, hoses and users' hands.
GCE's medical terminal-unit information identifies a particular gas-specific connection system. This illustrates why the terminal standard belongs in the order; it does not establish interchangeability with every outlet sold under a similar description.
The mounting detail affects maintenance
A flush panel requires an appropriate recess, stable support and a removable face arrangement. A surface panel has different projection and cleaning interfaces. In either case, coordinate concealed connections and service access before the wall finish is complete.
The terminal should remain identifiable and accessible when equipment is attached. Avoid placing a frequently used outlet where a door, trolley or adjacent fitting makes connection awkward or loads the hose sharply.
Acceptance goes beyond appearance
The 2026 SHTM 02-01 publication includes terminal schedules, gas-specificity and functional test documentation. These checks concern the installed pipeline system, not merely whether a faceplate fits its opening. Apply the standards and verification process required by the destination facility.
Have competent medical gas specialists manage installation and commissioning. Substituting an outlet or changing a service is not an ordinary furniture adjustment.
For procurement, provide the number and identity of services, terminal standard, mounting arrangement, panel dimensions and any associated electrical interfaces. Clarify whether the quote covers the enclosure, terminal assemblies or a complete documented package.
