A fan filter unit must deliver the required air through its filter at the conditions of the installed system. Nominal ceiling size and a free-air fan figure do not establish that operating point.
Account for the air path around the unit
Identify whether the FFU draws from an open plenum, a duct connection or another controlled space. Include the resistance of the relevant intake, filter and discharge arrangement. Compare selections using the same airflow and external conditions, with allowance for the selected filter's service range.
The filter class remains a separate requirement. A high-efficiency element does not make an FFU suitable for every cleanroom layout or prove a room classification. Equipment below the unit and the return-air arrangement affect how supplied air reaches the process.
Choose how the unit will be maintained
Room-side filter replacement and access from above have different implications. Check the ceiling structure, service clearance and removal route before settling the configuration. If the fan or control module requires overhead access, identify how technicians reach it safely without disturbing unsupported panels.
Camfil's Pharmaseal FFU illustrates an explicitly room-side-testable and replaceable arrangement. Such features must be selected and documented; they are not inherent in every FFU.
Make control behaviour understandable
Specify local or networked control, how airflow is adjusted and what a fault indication represents. A displayed speed setting is not necessarily a measured airflow. If the facility needs monitoring, define the sensor, alarm and response rather than assuming the fan controller provides all three.
For multiple units, retain an equipment schedule and identification scheme. This makes it possible to associate a setting, filter record or maintenance event with the correct location. Replacing one unit with a different performance curve should be reviewed against the local operating requirement.
