Extraction Hoods: Capture the Contaminant Before It Reaches the Worker

The position and shape of an extraction hood can matter as much as its exhaust volume. A hood must intercept the contaminant close to its release point while allowing the operator to perform the task. A large canopy above a source is not automatically an effective choice for every dust, vapour or fume.

Follow the release, not just the equipment outline

A rising hot plume, falling powder and sideways discharge have different movement. Locate the hood relative to that movement and the operator's breathing zone. Where practical, partial enclosure reduces the open area through which air must be drawn and makes capture less vulnerable to room cross-draughts.

A worker leaning between the source and the hood can draw contamination past the face. A mobile hood positioned correctly for one operation may be moved away when it obstructs access. The purchase decision should therefore include the normal working posture, tool changes and loading sequence.

The hood needs a complete exhaust system

The UK HSE's local exhaust ventilation commissioning guidance calls for demonstrating control of exposure during the actual process. Hood dimensions alone do not establish that result.

Duct and air mover
They must support the required capture duty and, where relevant, transport collected material without unsuitable deposits.
Replacement air
Exhaust air must be replaced without a supply jet disrupting capture or causing unacceptable building pressure.
Discharge or treatment
The destination and contaminant determine filtration, discharge arrangements and any restrictions on recirculation.

Make stainless steel a defined requirement

Choose the grade, joint finish and cleaning access for the substance and cleaning method. Stainless construction does not make an ordinary hood suitable for every corrosive vapour, combustible dust or hazardous process. Those applications need a specific assessment of the whole system.

Include removable access, drainage where appropriate and space to clean hidden surfaces. Record the commissioned operating condition so later checks can distinguish a blocked system from a changed process.
