An emergency luminaire provides required illumination when the normal lighting supply fails. Its emergency light output can differ substantially from its normal output, so ordinary wattage or brightness is not enough to select the fitting.
Use the emergency lighting design
The responsible designer should identify escape routes, changes in level, open areas and other locations requiring coverage. Spacing depends on the actual emergency photometric data, mounting height and required performance. Buying one light for each doorway does not establish adequate coverage between them.
Required operating duration and activation arrangements depend on the building, use and applicable rules. Do not apply a catalogue duration to every project without checking the design requirement.
Understand maintained and non-maintained operation
Eaton's emergency-lighting overview distinguishes maintained fittings, which operate in normal use and during an emergency, from non-maintained fittings activated by failure of the normal supply. The specified control and wiring must support the intended mode.
Self-contained and central-supply arrangements also have different maintenance and installation implications. Include batteries, chargers, monitoring and cabling responsibilities in the scope.
Design for testing and replacement
Provide a practical test arrangement and a way to record faults. A charge indicator does not prove that the luminaire will deliver its required output for the full duration. Periodic functional and duration testing should follow the applicable requirements and manufacturer's instructions.
Battery performance and life depend on operating conditions. Choose equipment for the expected ambient temperature, and ensure replacement parts remain accessible after installation.
Emergency illumination and exit-direction signs are related but distinct functions. Where one fitting provides both, its documented performance must cover both duties.
