A double-wall plate heat exchanger adds a second separating wall and a defined leakage path intended to make certain failures externally detectable before fluids mix. The protection depends on the actual construction and failure condition. It is not an absolute guarantee against every possible cross-contamination event.
Define the consequence of a leak
Identify both fluids, their pressures and the harm that unintended mixing could cause. The process assessment determines whether double-wall construction is appropriate and what additional monitoring or isolation is needed.
Ask the supplier to explain the leak path for plate damage and seal failures. Different gasketed and brazed double-wall designs manage these interfaces differently, so the words “double wall” are not a complete specification.
Make leakage discoverable
A design that directs leakage outward still needs an installation where it can be noticed or monitored. Insulation, covers or poor access should not hide the intended indication. Define who responds and how the affected equipment is isolated.
Alfa Laval's double-wall exchanger information describes external detection intended to reduce the possibility of fluid mixing. Obtain the specific offered design's leak-path explanation and conditions, rather than treating double-wall construction as an unconditional guarantee.
Allow for the thermal and service design
The additional separating structure changes heat transfer compared with a single-wall design. Select the unit using the actual fluid temperatures, flows and permitted pressure drops. Do not replace a single-wall pack with a nominally similar double-wall unit without recalculation.
Materials, gaskets or braze, cleaning methods and operating limits still need to match the fluids. Inspection and maintenance procedures should preserve the designed leak path and any monitoring features.
A useful enquiry contains the two circuit duties, the contamination concern and the facility's acceptance criteria. shengtongJH can coordinate configuration and sourcing against that requirement. Share the separation and monitoring brief before selecting the exchanger.
