A brazed plate heat exchanger joins a plate pack into a compact sealed assembly. It avoids the opening frame and field-replaceable channel gaskets of a gasketed unit, but normally cannot be opened for mechanical cleaning or individual plate replacement.
Choose the construction for both fluids
The plate material and brazing material both contact relevant process conditions. Compatibility cannot be decided from “stainless steel” alone. Identify the fluid chemistry, concentration, temperature and pressure on each side.
Specify the heat duty through inlet and outlet temperatures and flow. The channel arrangement must balance heat transfer and permitted pressure drop. Refrigerant applications need a selection suited to phase change and distribution, rather than reuse of a water-to-water rating.
Prevent the cleaning problem before it develops
Narrow flow passages can be vulnerable to unsuitable particles or deposits. Assess strainers, water treatment and a cleaning-in-place arrangement for the service. Cleaning chemistry and circulation conditions must remain compatible with the plate pack.

Protect the connections and operating envelope
Support pipework so it does not impose unintended bending loads on the connections. Follow the specified orientation and installation requirements, especially where fluid distribution or drainage depends on them.
Address freezing, pressure surges and rapid thermal changes through system design and controls. A small exchanger can be damaged by an unsuitable operating sequence even when its steady-state rating appears adequate.
For replacement, match thermal and hydraulic duty as well as connection size. A physically similar pack may have different channel geometry and resistance.
