DC Emergency Lighting Systems: Connect the Central Battery to the Complete Circuit

A central DC emergency lighting system supplies compatible luminaires from a shared battery installation. It can bring battery inspection and monitoring into one service location, but the circuits between that location and the lights become part of the emergency supply arrangement.

Start at the furthest connected fitting

The voltage at a luminaire differs from the voltage at the source when current flows through a cable. Review the operating voltage range, circuit length, conductor selection and connected load as a system. Check the condition across the required discharge period, rather than considering only a fully charged battery.

An ordinary AC fixture cannot be assumed to operate correctly from DC. Select the luminaire and driver versions approved for the actual supply and control method. Similar connectors or nominal power ratings do not establish compatibility.

Decide what a fault report must identify

Central-source monitoring, circuit monitoring and individual-luminaire monitoring provide different information. Normalux's central battery documentation distinguishes monitoring of outputs from addressable supervision of connected fittings. Individual reporting requires the matching equipment and communication arrangement.

A healthy cabinet indication should not be interpreted as proof that every light on a branch works. Define how failures are detected, how their location is identified and who receives the report. Keep the circuit and device labels consistent between the drawings, cabinet and maintenance records.

Choose circuit boundaries deliberately

Allocate lighting groups around the approved emergency design, including fault isolation and any required fire-zone separation. A short route for cabling is not the only consideration. A single circuit fault should have a clearly understood effect on the supported areas.

Assess battery duty from the actual connected load and required duration. Leave service access around the cabinet and follow the selected battery and charger instructions. Routine checks should include the distribution and luminaires as well as the source; record changes when fittings are added or replaced.
