ESD Workbenches: Connect the Surface, Operator and Process Equipment

An ESD workbench is an electrically coordinated workstation, not simply a metal table with a mat. The surface, operator, fixtures and equipment need an appropriate common reference and a verification programme. Mechanical layout and contamination control must also suit the work being performed.

The electrical arrangement

The EOS/ESD Association's workstation guidance describes a dissipative worksurface, personnel grounding and a common grounding point as key elements. Select the actual surface and connections against the site's ESD control plan. Grounding continuity through the metal frame does not establish the properties of the working surface.

Define how instruments, fixtures and personnel devices connect. Drawers, shelves and powered accessories may introduce surfaces or objects outside the verified arrangement. Where insulating process materials cannot be removed, consider the appropriate additional controls rather than assuming grounding will discharge them.

The working arrangement

Place the product within a comfortable working envelope. Coordinate lighting, magnification, tool supports and storage so operators do not repeatedly move sensitive items outside the controlled area. Check that an adjustable bench preserves its connections throughout its travel and that cords cannot be trapped.

Specify load capacity for the real distribution of equipment and fixtures. Concentrated loads, moving equipment and an upper shelf can impose different demands from a uniformly loaded tabletop. For cleanroom use, evaluate surfaces, exposed joints and permitted cleaning agents independently of ESD performance.

Acceptance and changes

Record the surface measurements, ground connections and personnel-grounding checks required by the programme. Identify the instruments and conditions used so subsequent checks are comparable. Verify the arrangement again after changes that can affect it, such as a new mat, relocated equipment or altered grounding connection.

Keep replacement items specified by function and compatible performance. A convenient ordinary shelf liner or cleaning product may change an otherwise satisfactory working surface. ESD controls do not replace the electrical-safety requirements for powered equipment.

Review ESD workbenches. Send the workstation layout, component sensitivity, equipment loads and site ESD requirements to shengtongjh to coordinate the table and its accessories.
