A static shielding bag provides a protective enclosure for electrostatic-discharge-sensitive items when its material and closure are suitable for the handling route. A low-charging bag and a discharge-shielding bag are different products. Colour or metallic appearance is not sufficient evidence of protection.
Specify the function of the packaging layers
The inner surface contacts the item, while a conductive layer can provide discharge shielding as part of the bag construction. Desco Industries' shielding-bag data identifies laminate structure, surface properties and shielding test information separately. Use equivalent evidence for the offered bag rather than copying those values to an unidentified alternative.
Moisture protection is another requirement. A static shielding bag should not automatically be treated as a moisture-barrier bag for moisture-sensitive components. If both are required, specify both functions and the associated packaging process.
Allow room for a real closure
Measure the packed item, including trays, connectors and protective supports. Flat bag dimensions do not describe the usable envelope around a thick assembly. Leave the closure space required by the chosen seal or zipper, and avoid stressing seams with protruding corners.
The protective enclosure must remain complete during transport. A board resting on top of an open bag is not enclosed by that bag. Establish where the bag is opened and how the item enters a verified ESD-protected workstation.
Control reuse by condition and process
Inspect folds, punctures, seams and closures before any permitted reuse. A bag can appear broadly intact while having damage that affects its intended protection. Define replacement criteria and traceability for critical work, and avoid unsupported assumptions about unlimited reuse.
For cleanroom transfer, assess cleanliness and packaging removal separately from electrical performance. The outer shipping layer, labels and cushioning should fit the controlled-entry procedure.
