Membrane Nitrogen Generators: Understand the Purity and Flow Tradeoff

A membrane nitrogen generator uses selective permeation through hollow fibres to produce a nitrogen-rich stream from compressed air. Its appeal is a relatively simple separation arrangement, but output remains linked to feed conditions and the required purity. Select from a performance curve, not from the membrane module's physical size.

Read purity and flow as a pair

Gas components pass through the membrane at different rates. Changing the operating point changes the relationship between product flow and residual oxygen. Atlas Copco's membrane nitrogen range presents nitrogen delivery at defined operating conditions. A maximum flow and maximum purity from separate catalogue points must not be combined into one promised duty.

State the actual oxygen limit needed by the process and whether it is required continuously or only after start-up. Choosing a more stringent limit without a process reason may increase the compressed air requirement or reduce usable output. If very high purity is essential, compare the proposed membrane arrangement with a suitable PSA system using the same acceptance basis.

Protect the feed and manage the exhaust

Obtain the membrane supplier's limits for moisture, particles, oil and temperature. Pretreatment is part of the installation, even if the separation module has few moving parts. Filter service and feed monitoring need to remain accessible after the unit is installed.

The permeate exhaust and nitrogen outlet have different compositions and purposes. Route exhaust as designed, and assess ventilation and oxygen-displacement risks for the complete installation. Do not connect or restrict exhaust paths simply to reduce noise without checking the manufacturer's requirements.

Plan for changing consumption

Map normal demand, peak demand and shutdown periods. Check how the unit responds to reduced flow and how gas quality is confirmed before supplying the process. Include pressure regulation, storage if required, monitoring and maintenance access in the scope comparison.

For membrane nitrogen generators, share the operating duty with shengtongjh: oxygen limit, flow reference, delivery pressure, ambient conditions and available compressed air. This gives a usable basis for comparing configurations.
