An oil-free air compressor avoids oil lubrication in its compression chamber, but the installation still needs a delivered-air specification. Intake contamination, moisture and the distribution system remain relevant. Select the compressor around flow, pressure and duty, then design the treatment needed at the point of use.
Choose a mechanism for the operating pattern
Oil-free piston, scroll and dry rotary equipment serve different sizes and demand profiles. Gardner Denver's technology overview describes several oil-free mechanisms. “Oil-free” does not mean that every bearing or drive component is unlubricated, nor does it mean maintenance-free operation.
For intermittent demand, check the permitted duty cycle and recovery time. For continuous processes, consider control range, cooling and what happens during maintenance. A larger receiver can support a short peak, but it does not increase the compressor's sustained delivery capacity.
Compare flow on the same basis
Record the required delivered airflow at the working pressure. Swept displacement, free air delivery and receiver volume are different quantities. Compare performance data at stated test conditions and include the pressure loss of dryers, filters and piping. Raising compressor pressure to compensate for an undersized network is not the same as correcting that network.
A useful demand profile shows idle periods, simultaneous users and brief peaks. This helps distinguish a machine that is frequently unloaded from one that cannot keep up. Include expansion only where the expected additional duty is defined.
Design the room and treatment as supporting systems
Check cooling-air paths or cooling-water availability, discharge heat, vibration, electrical supply and service clearances. Noise comparisons need matching measurement conditions and equipment configurations. A small cabinet can require substantial clearance around it for ventilation and repair.
Agree on particle, moisture and oil limits at a named use point. An oil-free mechanism or a component certificate does not automatically qualify the entire installation for medical, breathing-air or sterile-process service. Acceptance should match the specified system and operating conditions.
