An activated carbon compressed air filter addresses oil vapour that can pass through mechanical separation and coalescing filtration. Its useful service life depends on the contaminant load and operating conditions. A clean-looking element or low pressure drop does not establish that adsorption capacity remains.
Position adsorption after the appropriate pretreatment
Carbon media should receive air within the manufacturer's specified limits for liquid, aerosols, moisture and temperature. Pretreatment protects the adsorber from loads it was not selected to handle. The BEKO activated-carbon brochure describes compressed air passing through a carbon bed and shows cartridge and vessel arrangements. Their stated outlet performance belongs to those assemblies and test conditions.
A small cartridge may suit one duty while a larger bed supports a different loading and service interval. Compare the inlet oil-vapour assumption, operating temperature and required outlet limit alongside flow. A capacity claim without an inlet challenge says little about replacement frequency.
Separate restriction from exhaustion
Differential pressure helps identify resistance to airflow. Adsorption exhaustion is a different condition: vapour can break through without a dramatic increase in restriction. Define a replacement basis using the selected supplier's data, operating history and the monitoring required for the process.
Include the downstream arrangement in the review. Carbon dust control, where specified, and contamination from existing pipework can influence delivered air quality. Odour is not a reliable acceptance method, and an oil-vapour stage alone does not establish breathing-air or sterile-air suitability.
Make the consumable supply practical
Keep the approved media or cartridge identification, service access and disposal route in the maintenance plan. A generic replacement described only as “activated carbon” may have a different form, capacity or compatibility. Plan sufficient isolation and space for the manufacturer's replacement procedure.
