Compressed air filtration separates particular contaminants under defined operating conditions. A particulate filter, a coalescing element and an oil-vapour adsorber have different jobs. Buying the smallest quoted micron value does not establish a complete air-quality specification.
Identify what arrives at the use point
Solid particles may come from intake air, corrosion or downstream equipment. Liquid aerosols need a suitable coalescing arrangement and drainage. Water vapour requires drying, while oil vapour may require adsorption or another suitable treatment stage. A mechanical filter does not perform all four tasks.

Match housing and element as an assembly
- Pressure and temperature: verify the rating of the complete housing, bowl, seals, drain and accessories.
- Flow: use the stated reference conditions and applicable sizing corrections.
- Pressure loss: consider the selected element, operating state and replacement criterion, not just the empty housing.
- Drainage: give separated liquid a reliable discharge path and appropriate treatment.
- Service: allow enough clearance to remove the element and access isolation points.
A high-pressure filter cannot be substituted with a similar-sized lower-pressure housing. Likewise, an element that fits physically may have the wrong direction of flow, seals or filtration function. Record the complete assembly specification and approved replacement parts.
Check the result where the air is used
A clean compressor-room outlet can be followed by contaminated distribution piping, hoses or tools. Define the measurement location and contamination limits required by the process. Where an air-quality class is specified, identify the relevant particle, water and oil components and the agreed verification method.
