Heavy metal compressed air filter housing with a robust head and service valve

Compressed Air Filters

high pressure compressed air filter

Configuration options
Pressure families50 bar(g) threaded designs; higher-pressure stainless designs selected separately for the stated duty
Nominal connection sizes3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1½ and 2 in; size availability depends on the pressure family
Thread formBSP or NPT as ordered; mating connection and seal system must match
Housing constructionPressure-rated aluminium or stainless steel, selected for operating conditions
Filtration dutiesCoalescing aerosols or dry particles; adsorption requires its own rated configuration
Drain arrangementPressure-rated manual valve or compatible automatic drain assembly
InstrumentationRated differential pressure indicator, gauge connections or separate measurement ports
Temperature and flowStated with minimum line pressure, maximum inlet temperature and the volume reference basis

Port sizes are nominal thread designations, not measured bore diameters. The chosen pressure family determines the permitted dimensions, seals and accessories; the quotation includes its pressure–temperature limits.

Connection size, mounting, filtration grade and pressure-rated accessories can be customized to the application within the selected manufacturer's approved design.

A high pressure compressed air filter combines contaminant removal with a pressure-containing assembly suited to the actual service. A thick-looking bowl or stainless finish is not evidence of its allowable pressure. The head, closure, seals, drain and accessories must be selected together.

The weakest accessory sets a limit

High-pressure duty changes more than the housing wall. A drain, indicator or valve that is suitable for an ordinary factory air line may be unsuitable on a booster outlet. An assembly is only usable within the ratings of all its pressure-containing parts at the operating temperature. Every connection and accessory therefore belongs on the equipment schedule.

The purchase review should identify maximum operating pressure, compressor or booster shut-off conditions, pressure cycling and abnormal temperature exposure. Where pressure-equipment documentation is required for the installation country, agree the exact design code, inspection records and supplied documents before ordering. A brochure logo or generic certificate cannot replace identification of the supplied assembly.

Separate capacity from pressure rating

A filter rated to contain a high pressure is not automatically sized to process the required flow. Compressed volume changes with pressure, while published flow figures may use a free-air or reference-volume basis. The selected element's permitted velocity and pressure loss must be checked at the actual operating range.

Demand can vary as cylinders actuate or production equipment fills. Size for the relevant peak and the minimum pressure available at that peak. Use the manufacturer's correction method; do not multiply an ordinary line-filter rating and assume the same element is approved for booster service.

Match the contaminant and the material

Coalescing elements target liquid aerosols; particulate elements target solids. If the problem is oil vapour, a separate suitable adsorption stage is needed. Changing to a higher-pressure housing does not change what the media can remove.

Material and seal selection also depend on condensate, cleaning exposure and installation environment. Stainless steel can be appropriate for certain duties, but it is not a universal substitute for a specified alloy, seal or pressure design. This page covers compressed air; other gases require a separate compatibility review.

Make service access part of the installation

  1. Support the assembly. Keep pipe loads, vibration and thermal movement from being transferred into the filter ports. Maintain access to the approved closure and drain.
  2. Provide a controlled service boundary. The installation needs appropriate isolation and a means of releasing and verifying trapped pressure in accordance with the equipment instructions and site procedures.
  3. Use traceable replacement parts. Identify the exact element, seals and closure components. Similar dimensions do not establish compatibility.
  4. Control changes. Replacing an automatic drain or adding a gauge requires the same rating review as the original assembly. Do not modify a pressure housing to fit an unapproved accessory.

Opening, testing and maintaining the assembly are tasks for competent personnel using the supplier's instructions. No housing should be opened while pressure remains trapped.

What shengtongJH coordinates

We support sourcing of a documented configuration around your pressure duty, contaminant target and installation interfaces. A useful enquiry includes the pressure range, temperature, flow basis, thread standard, drain requirement and destination market. For a large air demand at conventional pressure, compare the separate high flow compressed air filter options; pressure capability and capacity are different selection questions.

Connection size, mounting, filtration grade and pressure-rated accessories can be customized to the application within the selected manufacturer's approved design.
