Dimensions describe building openings, not clear passage. The selected door drawing defines frame size and usable clearance.

Door dimensions, finish, vision panel and hardware can be customized for the installation environment and required escape function.

A steel fire exit door provides a durable opening for an escape route through an industrial or commercial building. Steel construction, corrosion protection and exit operation should be selected together; the material alone does not establish a fire-resistance rating.

Strength where the hardware works

In a warehouse or workshop, repeated operation places loads at the hinge, closer and latch positions. The door needs suitable internal reinforcement at those locations, not simply a thicker visible skin. Properly prepared fixings allow the hardware to transfer operating forces into the leaf and frame.

Choose the hardware set before final door preparation. Adding an exit device to an unprepared leaf can require unsuitable field drilling or leave fixing positions unsupported. Where a fire rating is required, changes also need to remain within the assembly's permitted construction.

The finish should match exposure, not just the colour scheme

Dry internal routes

Coated steel can provide a practical, cleanable surface for service corridors and industrial interiors. Handling damage should be addressed using the coating supplier's repair guidance before exposed edges begin to corrode.

Traffic patterns matter too: carts repeatedly striking the same edge call for appropriate protection and layout changes, rather than accepting recurring damage as normal.

External and demanding locations

Rain exposure, coastal air and frequent washing change the corrosion and sealing requirements. The leaf, frame, fasteners and hardware need a compatible specification. An attractive powder coat is not by itself a defined coastal-corrosion performance.

For exposed openings, coordinate drainage and weather protection with the building detail. Water trapped at the frame base can shorten service life even when the door face remains in good condition.

Choose a vision panel for a reason

A narrow window helps reveal traffic approaching from the other side of a service doorway. A solid leaf may be more appropriate where privacy, security or a simpler surface is needed. The choice should account for the process behind the door and any required fire or impact performance of the glazing.

The photograph shows one door arrangement; the external handle does not identify the escape-side lock function. That function is selected explicitly in the hardware schedule.

Fit and alignment determine how it feels in daily use

A rigid steel assembly can still become difficult to operate if the frame is fixed out of square or the finished floor reduces the intended bottom clearance. Provide the final floor level and supporting wall construction before the frame is ordered. Installation should follow the selected doorset's fixing and clearance requirements.

For purchasing, distinguish an unrated steel final exit from a fire door on an escape route. Both need suitable exit operation, but only the latter necessarily carries a specified fire-protection role. This avoids paying for the wrong configuration or omitting evidence the project needs.

Door dimensions, finish, vision panel and hardware can be customized for the installation environment and required escape function.
