Wall thickness, seam construction, seals and access details are selected for the actual air stream and pressure; no universal abrasion rating applies.

Industrial duct elbows can be configured around the conveyed material, extraction duty and maintenance method.

An industrial extraction elbow may carry far more than air. Dust, chips, moisture or process residue change where the fitting wears and how it must be cleaned. A general ventilation bend should not be selected for that duty solely because its diameter matches.

Describe the material reaching the turn

Particle size, shape and loading help distinguish a lightly dusty air stream from abrasive conveying. Particles do not follow a changing air direction perfectly, so impact and wear can concentrate around the outer part of a bend. A heavier wall or a replaceable wear provision may be appropriate, but the choice should follow the material and operating conditions.

Moist or sticky residue introduces a different concern: accumulation. Internal lips, poorly aligned joints and inaccessible pockets can make cleaning difficult. Select seam orientation and access together with the bend geometry.

Make replacement practical

A flanged removable section can allow a worn elbow to be exchanged without cutting the adjacent run. Leave lifting and withdrawal space, and support the surrounding duct independently. Otherwise, removing the elbow may leave unsupported pipework or require dismantling an unexpectedly large part of the system.

Match every part of the joint

The gasket, clamp or bolt set must suit pressure, temperature and contaminants along with the shell. A robust body joined by an unsuitable seal is still an unsuitable assembly. Keep a record of the selected connection details so replacement parts do not introduce a different bore or seal material.

Inspection follows the duty

Establish inspection access where wear or deposits are expected and use observed condition to inform maintenance intervals. Exterior appearance alone cannot establish remaining wall thickness. Where the process presents combustible-dust or other hazardous conditions, the elbow must form part of the engineered extraction and protection system; the fitting itself does not provide explosion protection.

For a defined right-angle route, see industrial duct elbows 90 degree.
