The nominal opening must not be used as a filter ordering size without checking the holder. Filter grade and pressure loss require a separate selection.

A return air grille 20 x 30 selection can combine a tall return face with accessible filtration. The nominal opening, visible border and filter dimensions need separate definitions so the installed door can open and the filter can be replaced normally.
Design the filter change, not just the closed door
A tall filter grille can provide useful access from the occupied side of a wall, but its door and filter need room to move. Check nearby cabinets, rails and service panels before choosing the hinge side. A filter that fits inside the frame may still be difficult to withdraw if the door cannot open far enough.
For overhead use, the support and retention arrangement need to suit a ceiling installation. Do not assume a wall-mounted hinge and latch detail is adequate simply because the nominal dimensions match.
Identify the replacement filter precisely
Nominal filter descriptions and actual manufactured dimensions can differ. Record the actual dimensions accepted by the holder and the selected media grade. Keep that information with the service record so future purchases do not rely only on the grille title.
Keep air passing through the media
A filter should seat against its intended retaining and sealing surfaces. A loose panel can allow air around the edges; an over-tight panel may bow or become difficult to remove. The holder, seal and filter need to be selected as a coordinated arrangement.
Allow for the filter as it loads
A clean filter is only the starting condition. Dust loading increases resistance and can affect return airflow. Select the media with the system pressure allowance in mind and establish a maintenance criterion appropriate to the installation.
