Cell size, strip thickness and frame reduce the usable opening differently. Do not assume a universal free-area percentage for every egg-crate product.

An egg crate return air grille uses an intersecting grid of straight strips to create open cells. It is useful where a relatively open face is preferred, provided the visible plenum and the mounting arrangement are suitable for the location.
Open cells change the appearance of the return
The square grid has no continuous angled blades across the face. This can leave a relatively direct air path, but it also makes the space behind the grille easier to see from some directions. Check the plenum finish and nearby lighting when the return is in an occupied commercial area.
If sightline control is important, compare the grid with an angled-louver face. Adding an unplanned dark sheet immediately behind an open core can undermine the reason for choosing it. Any backing or acoustic treatment needs to be coordinated with the airflow requirement.
Core
The grid strips need to remain straight and securely held. A damaged cell may not be obvious from a distance but can make cleaning more difficult. Specify the core depth and construction suited to the handling expected during maintenance.
Frame
A removable core needs a compatible retaining frame. A ceiling-grid product has a different support interface from a surface-mounted wall grille. Match the border to the installed location rather than ordering only the visible cell pattern.
Filter
An open grid does not filter air by itself. Where a filter is needed, include a proper holder and enough space to withdraw it without bending it through the cells.
Compare the selected assembly
Gross face area is not the same as effective free area. Strip thickness, cell depth, border and any rear accessory all affect the selected product.
