The nominal opening is not the outer face size. A narrow grille must still be selected for the required airflow and available system pressure.

A 30x8 return air grille offers a wide, shallow format for a commercial bulkhead or service enclosure. It requires a rear connection that uses the opening effectively and a mounting detail that supports the long frame without distortion.
Do not let the shallow plenum become the restriction
A narrow bulkhead may provide enough space for the face but very little depth behind it. The air then needs to turn into a duct through a confined transition. Review that turn before ordering the grille so the connection does not depend on a small opening at one end of an otherwise long face.
Provide a section through the bulkhead or enclosure with the enquiry. It helps distinguish the visible opening from the space available for the actual return-air path.
Support the frame across its span
A long border fixed only at weak ends can move or bow during cleaning. Provide a stable support and the required fixing points. Reinforcement should be selected as part of the frame construction rather than improvised by adding screws through the core.
Keep nearby hardware clear
Door closers, access-cover hinges and cable containment may occupy the same shallow strip. Check their working positions, not just their closed outlines. The grille core should remain removable without taking down unrelated equipment.
Choose filtration where it can be serviced
A very shallow return face is not always the best place for a filter. If the holder would leave an awkward withdrawal path, use the system's intended accessible filter location. Where an integrated filter is required, define its actual dimensions, support and replacement route together with the grille.
