A 24-inch opening is not automatically a 600 mm ceiling module. Agree the opening, module and visible face dimensions separately.
Grid or blade core, frame dimensions, finish and retention details can be customized to the duct or ceiling installation.
A 24x24 return air grille is selected here by a nominal 24-inch square opening. It should not be confused with the outside dimensions of a lay-in ceiling module; the mounting system must be specified separately.
Resolve the ceiling interface first
Square return grilles are often discussed using the ceiling module size, the duct opening size or the visible face size interchangeably. These are different dimensions. A frame designed to overlap a wall opening may not sit correctly in a suspended ceiling grid, even when both products are described with the same nominal square size.
Identify whether the grille is duct-connected or opens into a permitted return plenum, and obtain the actual ceiling interface dimensions. Match the frame and retention arrangement to that installation rather than trimming a standard flange on site.
Open grid or visual screening?
An eggcrate-style core offers an open passage but allows a more direct view behind the face. Inclined blades provide a different sightline. Where appearance matters, consider the return void and its lighting rather than choosing only from a close-up photograph of the grille.
Support the surrounding assembly
The grille should not carry a duct or plenum that was meant to be independently supported. Check how the rear assembly meets the ceiling and allow the grille to be removed without disturbing that support.
Keep selection tied to the actual core
Different grid depths, blade spacing and frame borders change the useful opening. Use the performance data for the chosen configuration at the required return flow. If a filter is included, its area, access and operating resistance belong in the selection as well. These checks avoid treating every square grille with a similar face as an interchangeable air-system component.
