The stated width and height describe the nominal opening. Outer frame size, neck clearance and filter dimensions are separately selected.
Blade orientation, frame depth, finish and fixing details can be customized to the return plenum and surrounding construction.
A 24 x 14 return air grille provides a landscape nominal opening. It can suit a wide return connection where available height is limited, but the plenum behind the face needs enough space to collect air across the full width.
A wide face needs an effective plenum
A shallow box behind a landscape grille may connect to a duct at only one end. If that connection is poorly arranged, air can favour part of the face while the rest contributes little useful area. Review the plenum geometry when changing a return opening rather than assuming that a wider grille automatically improves the whole air path.
The required transition depends on the return flow and the space available behind the fascia. A drawing showing the duct entry position is more useful than the front opening alone.
Choose where the blades run
Horizontal and vertical blade arrangements present different views of the void behind the grille. Identify the viewing angle from the occupied area and consider whether a direct line of sight into the plenum is acceptable. Blade direction should be agreed before matching the grille to surrounding joinery or wall lines.
Use the border as a finish, not a structural repair
The perimeter needs sound attachment points. Where an existing aperture is uneven, repair or frame the opening before fixing the grille. Tightening screws until a thin flange bends against the wall can distort the core seat and make a removable insert difficult to release.
Record the finish thickness at the opening, especially where wall lining or decorative cladding will be added after the ductwork. A neck selected too early may not sit correctly once the finished wall is complete.
Retain access to the connection
If the face provides access to the plenum, specify a removal method that maintenance staff can use without taking apart nearby finishes. Include clear space to withdraw the core. This turns the grille into a practical service point while keeping the return opening properly assembled during normal operation.
