A 22-inch opening does not by itself establish compatibility with a 24-inch ceiling grid. The selected manufacturer drawing and actual grid determine fit.
Opening, border, mounting detail and core can be customized to an existing aperture or a coordinated new installation.
A 22x22 return air grille is selected for a nominal 558.8 by 558.8 mm opening when the dimensions describe the duct or wall aperture. The same wording is sometimes used in ceiling selections, so the ordering dimension must be identified before manufacture or sourcing.
Identify which dimension is being replaced
A replacement request can start with a tape measure across the old grille face. That measurement is useful, but it may describe the outer border rather than the opening behind it. Before ordering, remove or inspect the existing frame and record both dimensions, together with the depth available for the new neck.
Some ceiling products use a face dimension associated with a larger nominal grid module. That relationship belongs to a particular frame design. It should not be transferred to another grille merely because the written size looks familiar.
Opening
Measure the clear aperture in both directions and note any obstructions. A duct neck, fixing bracket or unfinished edge can reduce the usable space behind an apparently square face.
Cover
Check the border needed to cover the existing joint and any old fixing marks. A wider cover flange can help a replacement finish, provided the grille still attaches to a sound structure.
Removal
Allow the core or entire face to be withdrawn without damaging adjacent finishes. This matters where a nonstandard opening sits close to a wall corner, beam or ceiling suspension member.
Choose the core after establishing the fit
Louvers can reduce the direct view into a service void, while an open eggcrate presents a different appearance and free-area characteristic. Neither choice corrects a restricted duct behind the grille. Compare the core and plenum as one air path rather than choosing by face size alone.
A clear dimensioned sketch gives shengtongJH the information needed to coordinate a suitable frame and core. For repeated replacements, retain the approved drawing so future orders do not start from a face measurement again.
