Overall frame, cut-out allowance and actual filter size must be confirmed from the chosen assembly; they are not the same as the nominal opening.
Core, border, finish and filter provision can be customized to the portrait opening and service requirements.
A 16x20 return air grille is a portrait rectangular face for an industrial or commercial return branch. A useful selection joins the nominal opening to a practical rear connection and service arrangement.
Start with the branch position
A portrait face can fit a vertical wall bay while keeping the return point close to the intended branch. Establish the rear connection before finalising the front location. Moving only the grille to suit the wall finish can leave an awkward offset or an unnecessarily restrictive box behind it.
Check that the connected space remains accessible and free from unintended obstructions. If the face is used to inspect a damper or return void, confirm that the required service task can actually be performed through the available core opening.
Separate the permanent frame from the service part
A fixed outer frame with a removable core can reduce repeated disturbance to the surrounding finish. The core should locate reliably and be held without rattling, while the outer frame remains securely attached to the supported opening.
For a simple unfiltered branch, the access requirement may be limited to cleaning. A filtered assembly needs a more deliberate release and withdrawal path. Decide which arrangement is required before ordering instead of adding an improvised holder behind a fixed face.
Include all resistance in selection
The return face, filter and rear transition each affect the pressure needed to move air. Provide the flow requirement and the selected filter information with the enquiry. A nominal size is useful for coordination, but it does not prove that a particular blade style or filter combination can meet the intended duty within the available fan pressure.
Record the approved frame dimensions and access arrangement so later replacement follows the same interface rather than a similar-looking product with different fixings.
