Provide a convenient surface for records and short documentation tasks, then fold it away to recover space at the wall.
A writing position that does not become a permanent obstacle
A fold-away desk creates a small working surface where records are prepared or checked. When closed, the surface returns towards the wall, leaving more space for circulation. This is useful where a freestanding desk would interfere with staff movement or mobile equipment.
Choose its location around the task. Staff should be able to write without standing in a doorway, blocking a gas outlet or placing documents on a clinical work surface. Consider the reader's height, lighting and whether a seated position is actually required before the mounting height is fixed.
Check the open position, not only the closed face
The fold-down leaf needs clearance for its complete movement and for the person using it. Nearby carts, cabinet handles and doors should be considered together. A damped support makes the movement more controlled, while a positive closed position helps prevent the desk opening unintentionally.
The work surface is intended for documentation and light working items. It should not be used as a seat, a step or a support for equipment without a defined load rating. If a laptop or other powered device is planned, organize its cable route so that closing the desk cannot trap or abrade the lead.
Simple surfaces, accessible joints
A stainless surface supports routine wiping, but the hinges, support mechanism and underside also need attention. Select a construction that allows these areas to be reached. Keep paper stores and loose items out of the closing mechanism.
Lighting and services
An optional task light can illuminate records without increasing the room's general lighting. Its switch, wiring and replacement access should be coordinated with the wall installation. Worktop dimensions, mounting details and service options can be customized for the intended documentation position.
