Activated carbon filters add a gas-treatment stage to ventilation systems. Panel, pocket and compact formats provide different ways to fit adsorbent media into an air-handling installation without confusing odour control with particle filtration.

Particles and gases need different treatment

A particulate filter can collect airborne dust while an odour continues to pass through it. Activated carbon addresses suitable gas-phase contaminants by adsorption: molecules attach to the extensive internal surface of the carbon. This makes it useful where the ventilation problem includes odour or a defined gaseous contaminant rather than dust alone.

The carbon must be selected for the substance being treated. A general odour description is a starting point, but a known chemical, concentration and operating pattern provide a much better basis for selection. Some substances require a different adsorbent or specially treated media; increasing ordinary carbon quantity does not solve every gas-control problem.

Choose the format around the installation

Panel

A shallow panel suits a constrained filter section or an existing rack. Its limited depth makes the available adsorbent quantity and contact time particularly important. Match the duty to the panel rather than expecting a compact replacement to behave like a deep carbon bed.

Pocket

Extended pockets provide more media area behind the face opening. They need enough downstream room to open correctly without rubbing adjacent components. Crushed or obstructed pockets waste useful area and can create uneven flow.

Compact

A compact bank arranges more media within a rigid form. It can suit installations where a stable geometry is preferable to flexible pockets. The frame depth, access door and removal route still need to match the housing.

Give the carbon a manageable load

Dust loading can obstruct the adsorbent surface and increase airflow resistance. A suitable upstream particulate stage helps keep the carbon stage focused on gas treatment. The sequence should also address droplets or other process carryover before these reach media that was selected for dry air.

Airflow affects both pressure drop and the time the air spends in contact with the media. Check the available fan pressure with the complete filter train in place. Humidity, temperature and competing gases can change useful capacity, so a filter chosen for one process should not automatically be transferred to a different exhaust stream.

Plan changeout around breakthrough

Pressure drop is useful for detecting restriction, but carbon can lose useful adsorption capacity without a large rise in resistance. Establish a replacement method around the target contaminant and operating history. Where the substance cannot safely be judged by smell, use an appropriate monitoring method rather than relying on an operator's perception.

A fit that keeps the air in the media

Check the frame seal and retention arrangement so that untreated air cannot take an easier path around the filter. Accessible mounting also makes future changeout cleaner and quicker. Format, dimensions and media selection can be customized for the gas-treatment application. Discuss the contaminant and ventilation duty.
